Il Poggione is one of the three original producers of Brunello di Montalcino, with origins dating back to the late 1800s. The estate is located in the warmer southwest corner of the appellation, near the picturesque town of Sant’Angelo in Colle. The estate totals 600 hectares, but only 125 hectares are planted to vines; the rest of the property is left to olive groves, woodland, and pasture for Maremma cattle. The grapes are grown at 400m and benefit from cool mornings, warm afternoons and a steady maritime breeze; perfect conditions for Sangiovese grosso to ripen happily. In the vineyard and the cellar, Il Poggione is dedicated to a mostly traditional approach, staying true to their roots without shunning advancements brought by modern winemaking technology. Hand-picked, meticulously sorted, and left to ferment naturally in stainless steel, followed by long aging in large French casks – 3 years for the “regular” bottling, 4 years for the Riserva – and then further aging at the winery in bottle. The end result is one of the greatest and truest expressions of Brunello di Montalcino in the world.
